Con Edison Solutions has installed solar arrays at five Catholic parishes on Staten Island and in Yonkers, N.Y., after signing 20-year power purchase agreements.

The Archdiocese of New York and the five parishes chose ConEd after a competitive procurement process involving more than 10 solar developers, and have been working with the company on the initiative since January 2017.

The solar projects are located at the Blessed Sacrament Parish (153 kW DC), St. Clare Parish (56 kW DC) and St. Patrick Parish (78 kW DC) on Staten Island and St. Ann Parish (134 kW DC) and St. Anthony Parish (136 kW DC ) in Yonkers.

“Preventing further environmental degradation has become a top priority for the Catholic Church under Pope Francis," said Bishop John O’Hara, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese, in a statement. "As such, the Archdiocese of New York is very pleased to partner with Con Edison Solutions to launch a solar pilot program that will allow five of our parishes to benefit from clean energy.”

In his second encyclical, Laudato Si', the pope called for people to take "swift and unified global action" against global warming, practice responsible development and protect the planet.
