Gusts of up to 46 mph in Las Vegas this week did not dampen the spirits of attendees of the S&P Global Platts 34th Annual Global Power Conference, but did put paid to plans for open air cigar parties. PFR editor Richard Metcalf and reporter Taryana Odayar were on hand to chronicle the action, inside and outside the conference hall.
As is often the case, sporting events occasionally stole the attention of project finance bankers, who were watching rapt as Virginia beat Texas Tech 85-77 to win their first NCAA basketball championship, when they should have been discussing deals over cocktails and sushi laid on by Latham & Watkins at Mizumi on Monday.
In the exhibition hall the next day, a bewildering array of swag was on offer, including yo-yos from Nautilus Consulting, golf balls from EthosEnergy, playing cards from BNY Mellon and a pen attached to a fidget spinner from Baker Botts. Al Rettenmaier, meanwhile, was handing out cookies to mark E3 Consulting’s 20th anniversary.
Several firms hosted lunches outside of the conference venue, but not always of the most nutritious variety. One banker attending Ares Management’s “lunch” at Lavo in the Palazzo had nothing more than a Bloody Mary. “That’s a bold move,” said a colleague.
The highlight of the conference program was arguably the project finance trends panel on Wednesday morning, as much for the fashion on display as the content of the discussion. S&P Global Ratings’ Aneesh Prabhu was sporting a watch on each wrist, one traditional and one "smart". Morrison Foerster partner Jeff Chester, meanwhile, cut a futuristic dash in a sleek, black mock turtleneck shirt and boots. “I’ve always been a Matrix fan,” a conference-goer commented.
Unfortunately, several attendees missed this display of sartorial elegance as they were on the golf course at an event hosted by Competitive Power Ventures. “Windiest day I ever played golf in my life,” said one of the golfers. “Still better than work but feeling pretty beat up for sure.”
