Montana utility NorthWestern Energy is seeking approval to acquire for $1 a 25% stake in unit 4 of the 2,094 MW Colstrip coal-fired plant.

The deal with Pugent Sound Energy—representing 185 MW of generation—is part of a plan to ensure the company has sufficient cash to cover environmental remediation and decommissioning costs when the time comes to shutter the unit.
