Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) is preparing its second transmission auction of the year, the largest in terms of investments ever held in the country.

The Brazilian agency is planning to tender nine projects divided into three lots that are set to bring in R$19.7 billion ($3.8 billion) in investments for the national grid. The projects include the construction and maintenance of 4,471km of transmission lines and two substations across five states.

Lots to be auctioned consist of:

  • Lot 1 - six projects comprising 1,513km of transmission lines across Maranhão, Goiás, and Tocantins, as well as two substations

  • Lot 2 - two projects comprising 551km of transmission lines across Goiás, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo

  • Lot 3 - one project comprising 338km of transmission lines in São Paulo

Projects have between 60 and 72 months to complete construction.

On Friday, 17 March, Aneel will open the public consultation process, and it will hold the auction on October 31.

“This auction, the largest in terms of investment amounts ever carried out by Aneel, is in line with the energy transition that Brazil has been undergoing. It is intended to bring renewable energy generated largely in the Northeast of the country to the center of consumption,” said Ricardo Tili, director of Aneel.

The first transmission auction of 2023 is scheduled for June 30 where 6,184 km of transmission lines will be tendered. Last December, the agency awarded 6 transmission projects representing a combined investment of R$3.51 billion ($688 million) across Brazil (PFR, 12/16).
