  • Mexico, Latin America's second biggest electricity producer after Brazil, has some 36,000 MW of installed generation capacity. Gas-fired plants are the dominant generation source, providing some 22,000 MW of capacity. A further 9,600 MW comes from hydroelectric power, 2,600 MW from coal-fired plants, 1,400 MW in nuclear capacity and 900 MW in geothermal power.

  • The Egyptian Electricity Authority (EEA) has scrapped plans to finance Cairo North, a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) project with non-recourse private sector bank debt and has instead tapped a variety of international and regional development banks for funding, says an official at the Cairo-based utility.
  • Morocco's Office National Electricité (ONE) has awarded Siemens preferred bidder status to take a 20% stake in a 400 MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant project, dubbed Tahaddart, says Javier Alonso, product manager at Endesa in Seville. Endesa has already been awarded a 32% share in Tahaddart (PFR, 3/26).
  • ANZ Investment Bank and Arab Banking Corp. will close general syndication this week on the $415 million Barka non-recourse loan, says Paul Mason, project financier, at ANZ in London.
  • A joint venture betweenCMS Energy and International Power, the preferred bidders for Al Shuweihat S1, has selected seven regional and international banks to arrange the roughly $2 billion construction costs of the 1,500 MW Abu Dhabi power and water desalination project. The project will be financed through a long-dated non-recourse bank loan, says an IP official in London.
  • Israel's Ministry of Industry is seeking foreign developers to build a roughly 350 MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant in southern Israel under a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) scheme. A partner at Joseph Levy & Co., a Tel Aviv law firm that is advising on the project, says the plant likely will cost $400 million to build.
