  • * Japan's Sanix will begin construction on the country's first thermal power plant utilizing recycled plastics at Tomakomai on the northern island of Hokkaido next month. Sanix plans to sell the output to retail customers in Hokkaido, challenging regional power company, Hokkaido Electric Power Co. (Dow Jones, 3/28).
  • * The Swedish government has approved plans to build 48 wind-powered generators at an offshore site off the coast of Sweden. Each turbine will have a 1.5 MW capacity (Helsingin Sanomat, 3/22).
  • Ontario Power Generation announced plans to invest up to $100 million over the next three years in companies that are developing alternative energy technologies. The investments will be made through a new subsidiary, OPG Ventures, which plans to inject capital in as many as 25 energy-related projects (Wall Street Journal, 3/19).
  • Brazil's Inepar will invest $1 billion to construct a 1,377 MW coal-fired power plant, dubbed Usina Termoeletrica de Sepetiba, in Rio de Janeiro (Jornal do Commercio, 3/16).
  • International Power is planning to build a series of power stations in northern Italy to take advantage of the liberalization of the country's electricity market. International Power could add up to 3,200 MW at a cost of EUR4 billion in a joint venture with Ansaldo Energia, an Italian turbine manufacturer (Financial Times, 3/22).
  • New York, the third most populous U.S. state, has some 36,000 MW of installed generation capacity. Some 36.6% of the Empire State's generation output comes from dual gas- and oil-fired plants. Hydroelectric plants account for a further 17.1%, oil-fired plants for 15.3%, coal plants for 13.2%, nuclear-powered plants for 16.8% and the remaining 1.1% comes from gas-fired plants, says Jack Elder, manager of power technology at Levitant & Associates in Boston.
  • * Constellation Power Source, an affiliate of Constellation Energy, signed a 10-year power purchase agreement contract worth $3.6 billion with the California Department of Water Resources (Reuters , 3/11).
  • * China is considering building nuclear power plants in Guangdong Province, Shandong Province and Zhejiang Province over the next five years (Interfax, 3/13).
  • * Endesa wants to sell EUR5 billion ($4.6 billion) of Spanish assets to finance European and South American acquisitions. It plans to put the assets on the market over the next four years (Financial Times, 3/13).
